The weekend started with this headline: Iowa State beats Oklahoma State. BCS chaos ensues.

They weren’t kidding. This was the most chaotic weekend of the season.

By the time the weekend was over, Oklahoma lost to Baylor, Oregon lost to Southern California and the path to an Alabama-LSU rematch was clear.

Alabama received the kind of help it needed to get back into the hunt. When the new BCS rankings come out Sunday night, the Crimson Tide will be No. 2. They’re also No. 2 in our poll.

After Oklahoma State lost on Friday night I think most people thought they were staring at an insane scenario with a wealth of one-loss teams vying for the right to play LSU.

Well, Oregon had a chance, but the Ducks squandered it against Southern Cal.

Oklahoma still had a chance, but they squandered it against Baylor.

But could there be more chaos?

LSU must play two more games to get to the BCS National Championship game. First, Arkansas comes to down, and don’t discount the Razorbacks. They’re playing fantastic football right now and could go right down to Baton Rouge and screw everything up. Alabama could still lose to Auburn. Don’t think so? It’s a rivalry game. Anything could happen.

But in the short term, Alabama certainly benefits the most from this largesse of upsets. And the Tide only has to win one more game to solidify its credentials as a BCS Championship game contender.

At the start of this month there seemed to be so many ways this could go, so many potential great matchups for January.

Who would have thought that 15 days after LSU beat Alabama we’d be talking about them playing again. Legitimately.

But, to paraphrase my favorite baseball manager, “Sometimes that’s how football go.”

And now the PigskinU Top 25 for Week 13.

1. LSU (1): Should anyone remind LSU coach Les Miles that his Tigers are 1-3 against Arkansas in their past four meetings? Just sayin’.

2. Alabama (3): The Tide will know their SEC fate before the Iron Bowl kicks off Saturday. You know Nick Saban won’t overlook Auburn.

3. Arkansas (6): If there was any question about SEC supremacy, consider that Arkansas would probably win every other conference in college football. Yet they’re third in their own division.

4. Stanford (7): Nice bounce back win for the Cardinal. Andrew Luck’s Heisman hopes remain alive.

5. Boise State (8): Like Stanford, the Broncos benefit greatly from the chaos ahead of them.

6. Virginia Tech (10): The Hokies need to beat Virginia next weekend to win the ACC Coastal Division and face Clemson in the ACC Title game. And that’s no given.

7. Oregon (4): The Ducks are done. The best they can hope for is the Rose Bowl now.

8. Oklahoma (5): Ditto for the Sooners. But they can still win the Big 12, oddly enough.

9. Oklahoma State (2): Stunned doesn’t begin to describe what happened in Ames. But OSU is still a Top 10 team. Barely.

10. Houston (11): Here comes the trap game, Cougars fans. Because Tulsa can score as many points as you can.

11. Wisconsin (13): The Badgers need only beat Penn State to face Michigan State in the inaugural Big Ten title game.

12. Georgia (14): Gotta hand it to Mark Richt. He got the Bulldogs back on the right track.

13. Penn State (15): Big win on the road at Ohio State. The Big Ten Leaders Division leaders (that sounds weird) still must take Wisconsin on the road.

14. Michigan State (16): Sparty’s on cruise control to Indianapolis. Why aren’t we talking about QB Mark Cousins more often?

15. South Carolina (17): The Gamecocks enjoyed their Citadel happy meal on Saturday. Clemson should be much tougher.

16. Michigan (19): A big win over Nebraska positions the Wolverines as the No. 2 or No. 3 bowl choice in the Big Ten.

17. Kansas State (18): The Wildcats remain a sure-fire third place in the Big 12. Thank goodness they played Baylor early in the year.

18. Nebraska (9): The Huskers did not show up in Ann Arbor and will likely end up in a lower-tier Big Ten bowl tie-in.

19. Baylor (NR): The Bears just keep finding ways to worm their way back into our Top 25. The Bears had never beaten Oklahoma before Saturday.

20. TCU (23): The Horned Frogs have clinched their postseason trip to Vegas.

21. Clemson (12): Wow. It’s not just that the Tigers lost to N.C. State. It’s HOW they lost. Blown out. I’m not sure they beat Va. Tech or Virginia in the ACC title game now.

22. Southern California (NR): Shame they can’t go to a bowl game. They’re pretty darned good now.

23. Georgia Tech (25): Beating Georgia next week would be nice for bragging rights.

24. West Virginia (24): The Backyard Brawl is coming up, and Pittsburgh needs a win to go to a bowl game. Watch out, Mountainteers.

25. Virginia (NR): Take your hat off to Mike London. He has the Cavs rolling into their game with Virginia Tech.
