Matthew Postins files The Walkthrough twice a week during the season at PigskinU.com. Early in the week, it’s a wrap-up of last weekend’s action. Late in the week, it’s a preview of what’s coming up that weekend. And it call comes with news, commentary and Postins’ dry wit and opinion.
Could the dominos in conference realignment start falling as early on Monday? The University of Oklahoma board of regents will meet on Monday and on the agenda will be the school’s conference affiliation. That doesn’t mean a decision is coming on Monday, but it means that the board must feel there’s enough information at hand to at least start talking about what direction the school wants to head.
If you’ve been keeping up, you know that the rest of the Big 12 is waiting to see if the Sooners are going to stay in the Big 12 or, most likely, head west to the Pac-12. There have been plenty of rumors the past couple of weeks, and perhaps it’s time the Sooners laid them to rest so we could all get on with our college football lives.
The fun part to me is seeing how deep OU’s move to the Pac 12 would cut into the game. I think we could all expect Oklahoma State to follow. But, how crazy will things get after that? Remember last year when we all though Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten would set off a wild and crazy summer of realignment and it never happened?
Well, here we go again. Potentially.
Al Davis really knows how to waste a draft pick. Ohio State booster Robert DiGeronimo told the Columbus Dispatch that he “responsible” for the $200 payments to three Ohio State players, a payment that led to two-game suspensions for all three players. The courier for the payment? Terrelle Pryor.
Yeah, that’s a guy I want on my team.
Of course, being “responsible” to DiGeronimo means saying that he didn’t provide the money and didn’t know how the money got in their hands. But, by God, he’s “responsible.” Has the definition of “responsible” changed?
So, here’s why Mississippi State is still standing outside the SEC elite. The Bulldogs, under Dan Mullen, have not won a SEC West Division game against an opponent not located in Mississippi. That came into clarity as the Bulldogs lost to the LSU Tigers Thursday night.
Forget Mississippi State trying to be one of the nation’s best teams. It needs to become one of the SEC’s best teams first. And, right now, they’re just middle of the road.
By the way, if I were Les Miles, I would quietly tell embattled QB Jordan Jefferson his presence is no longer needed. Jarrett Lee is doing just fine.
PigskinU.Com Trivia. Name the texas and BYU players that ended their college football careers by scoring the game-winning touchdown in a bowl game?
If you don’t believe the economy is bad, consider the following. A stolen sprinkler fitting at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, IN, will cost the HOF $100,000 in flooding damage.
The local law enforcement agency says the fitting that was stolen, which is brass, would fetch $5 on the open market.
Somebody really needed a Big Mac, apparently.
I’m really impressed by Wisconsin right now. Case in point? RB Montee Ball, who has scored 20 touchdowns in his last seven games.
That’s a good NFL SEASON for most pro backs. And this guy’s sharing time in the backfield. Amazing.
How big is Saturday’s game against Oklahoma for Florida State? The Seminoles have not beaten a Top 10 team since 1996. A win would be a huge boost for the Seminoles. I don’t think they get it, though. Oklahoma is just too good this year, in my opinion. The Sooners end up 3-0.
PigskinU.com Trivia Answer? For texas, it was Vince Young, who scored the game-winning touchdown against Southern Cal in the 2005 BCS National Championship game. For BYU, it was Steve Young, who scored the game-winning touchdown against Missouri in the 1983 Holiday Bowl. Vince’s touchdown was rushing, while Steve’ touchdown was receiving.
My Top Three Picks: If you pick three games this week …
Central Florida over FIU. I picked FIU right last week. Think I can’t do it again? Well, I’m taking the Knights in this one. Both teams have looked great in their first two games, but UCF has more talent overall and a bit more to play for. They’re one of the few non-automatic qualifying teams, in my opinion, that has the goods to go undefeated.
Ohio State over Miami (FL). There will probably be some temptation to take the Hurricanes, given how close the Buckeyes came to an upset against Toledo last week. Don’t give in. The Buckeyes are not as good as they usually are, but Miami is reeling and the Buckeyes will get it done on the road.
Utah over BYU. I’m taking the Utes. Sure, they lost to USC last week. But they didn’t give up a whole lot of points and they have a unit capable of keeping the BYU passing game from overwhelming them. Plus, I think Utah comes back refocused and ready to beat its in-state rival.
One more thing. Is there any college football player who has done less with his life, in comparison to his collegiate success, than former Ohio State QB Art Schlichter? He’s headed back to jail again, for at most 10 years, for his part in a Super Bowl ticket fraud scam.
I knew there was a reason they had so many ticket problems at Super Bowl XLV.
