Dos Equis vs Heineken Commercials

The Dos Equis vs Heineken commercials challenge is really starting to heat up! If you loved Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World ad campaign then you’ll enjoy Heinkens new commercial entitled “The Entrance” (gotta love the .19 second mark). Dos Equis has done a great job thus far but if they don’t implement a fresh approach soon it will start to get old. That being said, I’m hoping to see something new from Dos Equis soon.

Post a comment and tell me which commercial you like best!

Listen to my appearance on Barnhart and Durham

So I made my appearance with Barnhart and Durham — that is, Tony Barnhart and Wes Durham — on Sports Talk 790 The Zone this morning to talk about Sun Belt Conference expansion. Specifically, they wanted to talk about Georgia State University, the current FCS school in Atlanta that just started its program a few years ago. I made mention in my blog post at PigskinU.com last week that I thought GSU would be a good fit for the Sun Belt geographically, especially if the Sun Belt make a move to add an 11th member (rumors are that the SBC is considering adding a current FBS member that is in another conference).

It was a great conversation, and I was happy to learn that Barnhart — who writes for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and CBSSports.com — agreed with my assessment of the situation, as it pertained to GSU. We talked about the pros of a potential move for GSU and how it could impact the conference in revenue and bowl-tie ins.

It was my first radio appearance for PigskinU.com and it could not have gone better.

Catch me on Barnhart and Durham

Tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. EST you can catch me on Barnhart and Durham, hosted by Tony Barnhart and Wes Durham on Sports Radio 790 The Zone (WQXI) from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you follow college football, you know who these guys are. Barnhart writes for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and is featured regularly on CBS’ college football coverage. Durham is the play-by-play voice for Georgia Tech football and the Atlanta Falcons.

So, why am I going to be on? Well, about a week ago I wrote a column for PigskinU.com about the Sun Belt Conference. In it, I mentioned that the Sun Belt and Georgia State University should consider partnering up. GSU is located in Atlanta and, for the moment, is in FCS and considering an opportunity to join the Colonial Athletic Association. The way I see it, with the Sun Belt adding South Alabama and, perhaps another current FBS program, I think the SBC should consider courting GSU, which is in a Top 10 media market and features a respected head coach in Bill Curry.

I’ll find out how Barnhart and Durham see it tomorrow morning. But you can tune in. Click here to go to 790 The Zone’s Web site and click on the Listen Live button at the top right hand corner to catch my appearance.

And, if you didn’t read my post on Sun Belt expansion, click here to give it a read.

I’ll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

90 Minute IPA By Dogfish Head Review

A couple of posts ago I talked about what a great movie Beer Wars was. Well, I decided to try the 90 Minute IPA by Dogfish Head who was a featured microbrewery in the movie. I must say that the 90 Minute IPA sure is a mighty fine brew. The official web page for the beer says that it’s a “big beer with a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.” Now usually we take reviews with a grain of salt when it comes from the manufacture. However, after last night I will agree with that statement.

Jefferson’s and Brantley’s Lackluster Spring Games

LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson  struggled during spring games last weekend.

LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson is one of two SEC quarterbacks who struggled during spring games last weekendIf you had to pick two quarterbacks out of the south that had the most on the line during the spring, your radar probably locked in on LSU’s Jordan Jefferson and Florida’s John Brantley.

Jefferson, of course, I wrote about earlier this spring as the ONE thing LSU needed to make a legitimate national championship push. My theory was that his focused, well-rounded performance in the Cotton Bowl might give him a momentum push into the spring. I haven’t written about Brantley this spring, but you can see that the changes in Gainesville this off-season benefited him. The Gators went out and got a head coach (Will Muschamp) who wants a pro set offense and an offensive coordinator (Charlie Weis) who is well-schooled in that offense, and has worked with Tom Brady to boot. Arizona State New Uniforms

If ever there was a football program in need of some positive buzz, it is Arizona State.

After a build up of several weeks, ASU unveiled a new Nike-designed logo and new uniforms Tuesday. The Sun Devil will have alternative black ensemble and use the new logo, a stylized pitchfork on its helmets

The pitchfork will be incorporated on uniform shoulders and pants.

Gotta say, the black uniforms look pretty cool. The other uniforms look fine. I like the fork, too. Continue Reading…

The Sun Belt Conference has a plan

Louisiana Tech may be shopping for a new conference. The league at the top of its list may surprise you.

You probably don’t care too much about the Sun Belt Conference. In college football they’re No. 11 out of 11, in terms of conferences. That may never change. But, led by commissioner Wright Waters, they’re turning into a crafty little league that slowly, but surely, is making a case for No. 10. It appears as if the Sun Belt Conference has a plan for expansion.

Earlier this week the Miami Herald (I actually read this on CBSSports.com, but the Herald broke the story, so let’s give credit where credit is due) reported that the Sun Belt is trolling for a new member. They lost Denver a few months ago when the WAC extended invites, but that was an insignificant loss since Denver really only played basketball in the SBC. The conference still had nine football members. Well, the Herald reported that the SBC is looking for a member that shares its geographical ties, plays football and is currently a member of an established FBS conference. What’s more – and this is what really blew me away – the overtures were coming from those unnamed FBS schools, not the Sun Belt.

Loss of Garcia might be Gamecocks’ Gain

South Carolina‘s Stephen Garcia may never wear this helmet again.

When is subtraction actually addition? Perhaps, the loss of South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia might be the Gamecocks’ gain.

South Carolina suspended Garcia for the fifth time on Wednesday, citing his behavior at a recent event as being “unacceptable.” ESPN.com and other outlets reported that Garcia went to the Mentors in Violence Prevention program with alcohol on his breath, was disruptive and asked to leave. Garcia reportedly admitted to head coach Steve Spurrier that he was drinking beforehand and it led to the suspension, which actually came from the athletic department, not Spurrier.

I read some of Spurrier’s quotes from his post-practice press conference on Wednesday and they had the sound of resignation, as if he knew deep down that Garcia would no longer be a part of the program and that he had enough. One was quite telling, as he treated Garcia’s absence as “really the same thing as a guy getting hurt, a guy going pro or whatever.”
